Smart sprinkler controllers — the wifi-connected, weather-aware version of the basic timer in your garage — have come a long way. In North Texas, where summer heat, watering restrictions, and unpredictable rain make traditional schedules wasteful, they're often the highest-ROI upgrade you can make to an existing system. Here's how the three brands we see most often compare.
Rachio (3rd Gen / G3)
Our most-installed smart controller. Rachio is the consumer-friendly default — clean app, easy wifi setup, weather-based skip rules that respect your city's watering days, and integrations with Alexa, Google Home, and SmartThings.
Best for: Most North Texas homeowners. If you want "smart" without learning a new system, Rachio is it. The app is genuinely good, weekly water-use summaries are clear, and the auto-skip-when-raining feature works reliably here.
Not for: Homeowners who want flow monitoring or per-zone leak detection out of the box — Rachio added flow sensors as an accessory but they're not built into the controller itself.
Hunter Hydrawise (HPC / Pro-HC)
Hunter's smart-controller line. Slightly more professional-installer-oriented than Rachio — better suited if you have a larger system (16+ zones), want predictive watering based on local weather forecasts (not just current conditions), or want built-in flow monitoring.
Best for: Larger residential systems, homes with multiple separate areas (front, back, side, beds with drip), or homeowners who want to monitor for leaks remotely.
Not for: Anyone who wants the simplest possible app experience — Hydrawise is powerful but has more knobs.
Rain Bird ESP-Me & ESP-TM2
Rain Bird's pro-grade smart controllers. We install these when a homeowner wants a smart controller integrated into an existing Rain Bird system (heads, valves, etc.) and wants everything from one manufacturer for warranty consistency.
Best for: Existing Rain Bird systems being upgraded zone-by-zone over time. The ESP family also handles 12-station and larger configurations well.
Not for: First-time smart-controller buyers who want the most polished app — Rain Bird's app is competent but not as refined as Rachio.
Which One Should You Get?
For most North Texas homeowners with a 6–12 zone residential system, the answer is Rachio — it's the easiest to use, integrates well with Frisco, McKinney, and Plano watering restrictions, and just works. For larger systems or homes with serious leak concerns, Hydrawise edges it out. For brand-loyal Rain Bird homeowners, the ESP family is a clean choice.
All three pay themselves back within 1–2 seasons here. The water you save in July alone usually covers the controller upgrade.
What About Rebates?
Many North Texas water utilities offer rebates of $50–$100 for smart controller installations. Frisco, Plano, and several other cities run these programs through their water conservation offices. We'll tell you what's available in your city when we come out — and the rebate often covers the labor on the controller install.
